![]() The Il Lokeridede Pillar Site is located near the end of a small ridge spur overlooking a minor tributary in the badlands north of Laga Il Lokeridede, as marked by the red dot in this Google Earth image. The base of Koobi Fora Ridge is located across Il Lokeridede Laga to the south. Based on GPS measurements made by Chris Koch, the Il Lokeridede site is at an elevation of 435 m., 1.8 km. north of Dongodian.

Look closely. From the bush to the last group of standing people on the left, there is a slight pankake of debris that marks the central burial area at the Il Lokeridede Pillar Site. No pillars on this sky line; they were fashioned of sandstone and have all fallen and broken.

From the photo. The cairn in the foreground may or may not be related to the site.

This pavement of sandstone slabs may have been let down through mass wasting, though most do not obviously articulate with their neighbors. On the other hand, the pavement could have been created as part of the site structure, though artefacts are very uncommon on the surface among the slabs.

The person taking notes is seated just beyond the edge of the low mound at Il Lokeridede. Several fallen pillars have been reconstructed in the foreground. North Island can just be seen in the haze on the horizon. ![]()

The Il Lokeridede Pillar Site is not easy to find. Here you see Koobi Fora spit at the upper right, the lab tent in the middle ground, and a very large cairn just a ways beyond the lab tent. Cairns are not uncommon in this region, so it is not known if this particular cairn has anything to do with the pillar site.

Looking southeast over the Il Lokeridede Pillar Site toward the base of Koobi For Ridge. The site is situated to take advantage of a stromatolite rubble beach strewn with sandstone slabs and underlain by fine sand in which deep pits can easily be dug.
