K Dein zehnter Todestag giebt mir Veranlassung, dich zu beglückwünschen, Onkel.

E Witz und heitere Launen scheinen dir auch im Jenseits nicht fremd, zumindest geläufiger als der vernünftige Ernst im Leben.

K Ich scherze nicht, ich preise dich wirklich glücklich, die Folgen des Mordverbrechens an dich nicht miterlebt zu haben.

E Du zeigst, was ich stets mit Bedauern an dir vermisst habe, einigen Geist. Auch ohne die ruchlose Hand des Schuljungen Prinzip* wäre die Welt in Brand geraten.

K Und ich, der unerfahrene Feuerwehrmann hätte ihn löschen sollen.

E Nein, liebes Kind, zum Löschen warst du nicht berufen. Dazu hätte eine kräftige Natur, ein fester und entschlossenen Charakter, ein durchdringender Weltblick gehört, alles Gaben, derer du dich ebensowenig rühmen konntest, als alle deine Ahnen vorder.

K Die auch die deinigen waren.

E Ich zählte nicht zu ihren Reihen.

K Du sahst in Franz ]oseph nicht deinen Freund.

E Er stand zu sehr unter dem Einfluss der Parteien und der Aussenwelt.

K Du liebtest die Ungarn nicht.

E Sie nahmen sich zu viel Rechte und Freiheiten heraus.

K Du hasstest die Italiener.

E Sie sind Feinde der Kirche und der Wortstreue.

K Die Deutschen standen nicht in deiner Gunst.

E Ich verabscheute die Ketzer und die DünkelvoUen.

K Und als Slavenfreund die Germanen überhaupt. Ich kann schwer ausdenken wie du mit diesen Grundsätzen dein grosses Reich, das Ungarn, Italien und Deutsche in sich schloss, regieren wolltest.

E Ich hätte mich Russland und Frankreich angeschlossen.

K Mein Onkel, du wärst wie ich und unser grosses Gesammtreich von der Welt ausgeschlosen werden. Die Feinde im Inneren, die seit Jahrhunderten grossgezogen wurden, hätten dich davongejagt, wie sei es mit mir getan haben. Unser Thron war nicht zu retten.

K The tenth anniversary of your death gives me the inducement to congratulate you, uncle.

E In the hereafter jokes and happy tunes also do not appear strange to one, at the very least they are more common than sensible sobriety in life.

K I am not joking. I consider you very fortunate that you did not have to live the consequences of the crime of murder against you.

E You show some spirit, something that regretfully I always missed in you. Even without the nefarious hand of the schoolboy Princip*, the world would have erupted in flames.

K And I, the inexperienced fireman, should have extinguished it.

E No, dear child, you were not called to be the extinguisher. For that a powerful nature, a strong and determined character, a penetrating view of the world would have been needed, gifts that you, no more than your preceding ancestors, could claim for yourself.

K They also were yours.

E I do not count myself among them.

K You did not see Franz ]oseph as your friend.

E He was too much under the influence of the parties and the outside world.

K You did not like Hungary.

E They took too many rights and freedoms unto themselves.

K You hate the Italians.

E They are enemies of the church and the pledged word.

K The Germans are not in your favor.

E I detest the heretics that are full of deceit.

K And above all the Germans as friends of the Slavs. I have difficulty thinking on how, with these principles, you would rule your great country that includes Hungary, Italy and Germans.

E I would have attached myself to Russia and France.

K My unde, you with our entire empire would have been, like myself, excluded from the world. The internal enemies, that were raised for hundreds of years, would have chased you out, just like they did me. Our throne could not be saved.

Die Welt von 1924 ist nicht die des Jahres 1914. Das zaristische Russland hat einem demagogischen Volksregime weichen müssen, Österreich und Ungarn wurde in nationale Stücke zerschlagen, Deutschland und Polen sind Republiken geworden und auf den Köpfen der noch regierenden Fürsten beginnen die Kronen zu wackeln. Ob es besser geworden ist, ist in diesem Zeitpunkte noch nicht entschieden, dagegen steht die Tatsache fest, das es vordem schlecht gewesen ist. Die Politik war allerorten eine verfehlte und das militärische Gebahren geradezu ein verbrecherische Torheit. Der Mord in Sarajevo am 28 Juni 1914 war nur eine Auswirkung beider verhängnisvollen Richtungen.

The world of 1924 is not that of the year 1914. The tsarist Russia had to yield to a demagogic Peoples regime, Austria and Hungary were smashed into nationalistic pieces, Germany and Poland became republics and on the heads of the remaining ruling princes the crowns start to wobble. If that is an improvement, it can not be judged at this point in time, against which stands the fact that before it was worse. Politics everywhere were a failing and the military posturing almost a criminal folly. The murder in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914 was only a consequence of both of these fatal trends.
