Purpose
- To provide an opportunity for competitive public speaking among students.
- To stimulate self expression and independent thinking.
- To present to the public an insight into an issue surrounding the maintenance of a free nation.
- To consider the means at our disposal for meeting present and future issues in the world.
Rules of Participation
- The competition is open to any student in Grades 10, 11 and 12.
- The speech must be between 5 and 10 minutes in length.
- The speech must be approved by a member of the school faculty or the Lions liaison.
- A manuscript of the speech must be submitted prior to each level of competition.
Competition
- Competition will occur at the Club, Zone, District and State Levels.
- The winners from each level will participate in the next level.
- The speech may be amended, but not rewritten, for the Zone and District competitions.
- The speech may not be amended or rewritten for the State competition.
Awards
- Awards for the Club contests are raised and managed by individual clubs. The Arlington Lions Club awards a $50 savings bond to its winner and publishes the speech in its newsletter.
- The District winner receives $1,000; runners-ups $100 each.
- The State winner receives $1,500; runners-up $500 each.
Calendar for Arlington Lions Club Participation
- Registration Deadline is October 31st.
- The Arlington Lions Club contest will be held the second Tuesday of November.
