THE ANIMAL AT THE EDGE OF THE PLATEAU

NETTO Nos. 738 II & 847 I

This error occurs in all the stamps in the sixth vertical row of the sheet and is therefore common. Details of the "animal" vary depending on the vertical position in the row, and the age and inking of the plate.

In this well inked example, bleeding makes the animal at the edge of the plateau fuzzy and creates a blizzard of snow being blown from the mountain.

In this later reissue of the stamp, the inking is not so heavy. The animal lookes like it might actually be an animal and the winds off the mountain are moderate. This is the most common form of this plate flaw.

Although the appearance of the screen indicates that this print was reasonably well inked, the mountain now appears with interlocking strokes delineating its skyline. Was the mountain redrawn or is this a very worn plate?
